This book proved me wrong completely. But above all, the book highlights the stigmas that exist in our society to this day. Anand does not respond to her letters. The story is an endearing read because it holds true for every generation of Indian society. Returning to her maternal home, she gets ill-treated by her step-mother as could be expected. The book is just five pages away from the close, and the reader expects or hopes! A few years later, her husband realises his mistake and comes back to apologise, and to take her home.
Seldom you come across a fiction novel which leaves you in tears. What is more painful than mkrthy disease is the realization that her husband married her only because she had a beautiful face and body. I understand where she comes from, to have a blemished skin can be a curse. She finds fairy tale love and gets married, only to find mahashwrta dreams shattered to pieces, when she discovers that she has leukoderma. The events all remind you of those sad Indian movies of s and 60s.
The way she has managed to capture the shallow mindset of Indian villagers is new to me. We love the books because they take us closer to the mundane reality of the world. Anupama looked into the mirror and shivered with shock. Mahashweta I love the subjects she choses to write about.
How mahashwega can you explain it, when a fast-bowler, known more for off-field antics than on-field heroics, one who cannot even write a proper tweet without making OK.
